Roa Island Lifeboat Station
Empty shed showing the viewing gallery looking past the door which is only partially open. The horizontal cradle where the lifeboat sits in the shed has to be pushed up hydraulically to get the angle right before the winch drags the lifeboat up the slipway. Once the boat is on the cradle it is lowered again to sit flat as the new lifeboat weighs 30tons, too much to have it sitting at an angle.
Uploaded by John Falvey

The relief Tamar Class boat inside, the lifeboat station at Roa Island
(This is one was on loan and not Barrows own Tamar 'Grace Dixon' which was being repaired after damage was caused on her delivery run North). She is much bigger than the old Tyne class boat 'James Bibby' and there is only 9 inches clearance between the bottom of the door and the top of the windshield.

The Teacher is Mr Shaw.  I am last on the right on the third row. The Lappin brothers are there,
Howard Palmer on the back row who ended up sailing to the West Indies I think,
I think the front left row is Russell Eves who ended up working in the US on Space work.
In those days it was called Rawlinson Street Junior School not Greengate.
Another interesting thing is that the boys and girls were taught apart with the boys occupying the Rawlinson
St end of the school and the girls the Sutherland St end.

Just checked out my father's diary for that time

May 7th 2006. . Talks about Mr Churchill announcing VE Day and everybody to get a holiday. With the buses not running it made difficult to get about but my parents took us on the tandem to town. Dalton road was fairly festive but with lack of transport things were quiet. There were one or two drunks around.

May 13th I had my 6th birthday party with a small party at my house. Billy and Ann Moore, Ann Mills, Doreen Shepherd came. (I wonder where they are now?)

BGS School Prefects 1940-1941 Apologies for the quality but this is a copy of a copy - and, as such, it's not too bad. Please note that the names are included on the photograph. The following comments may be of interest: T (Tom) F Milburn's father owned the grocery store on the corner of Cambridge Street and Risedale Road opposite the Roose Road Methodist church hall. B (Basil) G Keddie was a superb all-round athlete who lived on Abbots Vale: he was a killed as a Sub Lieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm flying in a Barracuda off the Isle of Man. M "Moggie" W Matthew's father owned the butchers shop on Risedale Road close by Miss Drake's sub post office and opposite to Harry Last's chemists shop. N (Norman) Stevenson lived somewhere in the Risedale Road area - he used to walk up Park Drive to school - as did all the above mentioned. V ("Vic") I Milne now lives in Vancouver. The Headmaster at that time was "Barney" Johnson - always referred to as "The Gaff". He left the BGS probably before the start of the 1941 year Photo donated by Jack Edmondson - courtesy of Arthur Crook.

Coast Road photos
There are 2 photos here.  The first picture was taken in the summer of 1935 ( note my coat blowing!) with my mother and ? in front of the cottage my folks rented for two weeks that year. At the time we were living in the Police Station at Dalton in Furness , which allowed my father to cycle to the cottage after being on duty it being on the Coast Road at Newbiggin on the foreshore just past Seed House. As you can see, the cottage has survived quite well although I have not weathered quite as well over the 69 years between the 1st photo and the colored on taken in 1998 on my last visit to the UK. I am still however wearing spectacles and the cottage looks very similar to the style in Alex's article except for the different roofline which appears to still have the original covering.
